Kilkenny Community Action Network is the agency with responsibility for implementing the Local Development Social Inclusion Programme in Kilkenny city. The organisation was established in 1994 when three community areas (Bishop Birch Place, The Butts and Loughboy) submitted a joint application for funding under the first round of EU funds, which was announced by the government in the autumn of 1993.

In 1996, when a further successful application for funding was made, the community areas of Newpark Close and Hebron Park were also included in the K.C.A.N. remit. The organisation is currently funded under the National Development Plan 2000 - 2006.

K.C.A.N.'s work falls into 3 categories:

Services to the unemployed
Community development
Community based youth initiatives

K.C.A.N. also administers funding received from the Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform under the Equality for Women Measure.

We support a number of target groups under the above measures, including women, Travellers, asylum seekers/refugees, long term unemployed and people with disabilities. Some examples of projects we are presently supporting are:

Services to the unemployed - One to one support for people who are unemployed and wish to take up further education/training, set up a business or take up paid employment.

Community development - K.C.A.N. provides support to groups in the specific geographical areas mentioned above. This support focuses on developing their capacity to establish and manage their own community facilities.

Community based youth initiatives - K.C.A.N. is involved with a number of projects that work with young people - early school leavers, young offenders, childcare etc.

Programmes under the Equality for Women Measure are being developed and will centre on a comprehensive pathway approach to career development.
